Kay Henderson’s recent submission to the WW1 Mail Art project depicts the many employment roles women took on during WW1. Using pictures and text, Henderson depicts a range of jobs, including working in the flour mills, glass factories and working the land.
Kay Henderson presents the images of working class women at work alongside the names of those that moved from domestic work , to the world once dominated by men. Here wages were higher, (although not equal) and the design of clothing the women wore transformed becoming practical for the job in hand. The independence some of these women experienced must have been life transforming.
